One Piece has captured audiences worldwide with its vibrant characters, crazy adventures, and a trove of mysteries. At the heart of this very tale is Monkey D. Luffy, the pirate captain with a dream of becoming the Pirate King. But think, what if the story had taken a different turn—with a different main character?
Imagine: Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman with a dream of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, was the main character.
Some say that Zoro is a key character in the hit anime series and is quite essential to its functionality. Others say that Monkey D. Luffy was the main character and Zoro was not as important as him.
Some say that Roronoa Zoro has a serious and stern personality, but he can also be goofy and short-tempered. He’s known mostly for his fearsome reputation, but he also has a very kind heart.
What if Zoro Led His Own Clan?
If Roronoa Zoro was the main character, One Piece would have definitely offered a special perspective on the series. Luffy’s journey was full of him finding freedom and adventure, whereas Zoro’s was a path of discipline, perseverance, and the ever relentless pursuit of strength. The narrative would most likely revolve around and delve deeper into the findings of old ancient swordsmanship, and finding ancient techniques, legendary blades, and intricate strategies that define a true master.
Imagine what if Zoro, not as the second character of the Straw Hat Pirates, but as the very captain of one and only his own clan. His clan members could had been a very diverse group of swordsmen, each with their very own unique styles and aspirations.
A Darker Tone
A Zoro-centric One Piece could had taken a darker tone. As Luffy’s journey was pretty much filled with humor and lighthearted moments, Zoro’s was filled with serious and a stern personality. His past, very much, was a mystery. It could have been explored in greater detail, revealing to us a very tragic backstory, which might have shown his extreme desire to become the strongest.
In the colourful world of One Piece, this alternate universe could also be more somber. Instead of the very vibrant and colourful world of One Piece, we could have seen a darker; a more precious and a pretty realistic depiction of the very pirate age. A world where power and strength is the ultimate currency, and where betrayal and sacrifice are commonplace.
Even though it is just speculation, Oda Eiichiro, the creator of One Piece, has created a masterpiece, which is exciting, complex and extremely heartwarming. A Zoro-centric manga quite frankly would have offered a unique and exciting experience.
